Article - Visionary leadership and employee creativity in China.
In this article, the authors were intent on answering the question "how visionary leadership style affects employees' creativity in R&D teams in China, and what is the role of employee goal orientation and knowledge sharing? In answering this question, the research authors engages about 331 respondents who mainly consists of 331 professional technical engineers stationed at R & D departments of 62 high-tech corporations in different parts of China. To analyze the data, the researcher used regression model to establish the correlation between visionary styles of leadership and knowledge sharing, employee orientation as well as employee creativity. The study generally concludes that the use of visionary leadership style contributes to employee creativity among the organizations that were under the case study. Furthermore, it also leads to positive knowledge sharing among the employees. Moreover, the researchers also find a relationship between the use of visionary leadership with employee learning and performance. On the other hand, employees who avoid to be measured on their performance or rather those who are not oriented towards positive performance are not comfortable with visionary leadership as well as knowledge sharing.
However, those who are oriented towards learning are quite positive towards visionary leadership style and are also comfortable regarding knowledge sharing. The implication of this finding is that the success in the use of visionary style of leadership largely depends on the attitude of the subjects. It would thus be prudent for management and personnel in the senior positions to ensure that their subject's attitude is positive and motivated when using this kind of leadership style. Simply stated, visionary leadership style may not work effectively on subjects who are demotivated or those with negative perceptions about their work or leaders. The main contribution of this research on the academic sphere is the finding that the use of visionary leadership in Chinese contexts has a positive correlation with raising the creativity of employees. However, as already established the effect is largely depended on employee knowledge sharing and goal orientations. This is a contradiction of Western organizational contexts where a leadership style that is less directive is recommended for effective management of subjects.
