Health care ethics is the application of principles of bioethics while making medical and health care decisions. It acts as a lens which is used to view issues that are complex in nature and thereby helps in making recommendations during course of action. Application of ethics in health care specifically in nursing helps in improvement of the patient care. There are a set of moral principles including beliefs and values thereby guiding the nursing and all the other associates of health care to make choice about the medical care. The ethical aspect of health is required to be examined carefully as because it helps in making right choices along with the choices being good and fair.
The responsibility on the ethical grounds varies from situation to situation. The ethical obligations in between patient and his family is different from that of a patient and his physician. Basically there are four principles which have been identified and classified for the health care professionals which they are required to follow while discharging their roles and responsibilities. Those are discussed as below:
- Autonomy: It means encouraging and honouring the rights which the patients have so that they can make and arrive at their own decision.
- Justice: This means that the health care professionals are required to be fair and should treat all the cases in a similar way without being partial and bias
- Beneficence: This means that the patients should be helped in keeping their good and help the patient advance towards it
- No maleficence: This principle implies the fact that the health professionals should not conduct any activity that will ultimately result in harming the patient.
All the above four principles discussed are required to be followed giving equal weight and importance all the time by the health professionals.
