Getting started - drchrono EHR

It was a wonderful experience to navigate the drchrono software and get used to the options. Perhaps, for anyone new to EHR and wanted a career in this field, it is important to know the options available.

In the first section, I learnt that there is a sorting feature on patient names and there are multiple tabs to manage account and other functionalities. I scored complete marks on the first step of getting started. This gave me the satisfaction to progress to new features and tabs to understand the system to a better extent.

Registering a patient
During this attempt, I was able to gain an understanding on patient fields that will be stored in the database along with the objective of this patient registration portal.

Here are a few lessons from this section:

Natural language processing software uses the free text and processes into meaningful information in EHR system.

When we store information of a patient, there is a chance for redundancy and this need to be avoided. Common fields include same first and last name, same date of birth and same SSN.

EHR allows patients to email the health summary to another person.

Reflection

While there were lessons, what was so useful to me was the meaningful use of EHR system.

I thought this to be yet another system that we use inside the healthcare premises. With a basic knowledge, I lost a point but I understood that meaningful use of the EHR can improve the end objectives.

This section of the activity was interesting as well as informative. I would remember the answers and apply them whenever I use a similar system in the future.

Navigating drchrono EHR (clinical)

As I navigated through the system, I was introduced to a whole lot of features and the questions asked were a bit complex. Though I failed in this section of the test, I still feel that the experience is worth.

Firstly, I came to know the data elements that form the pre-op note preview template. I was aware that there is a pre-op note that includes data of the patients and surgery information. However, this section gave me an overall clarity on the template.

Secondly, I gained a thorough understanding on the patient audit log. Though I knew that this clinical document has a detailed report of the clinical history of the patient, it was more focused on providing details to the patient. Eventually, I scored a point as well.

Thirdly, there was a question on security concerns that I got it wrong. All these days, I thought that unauthorized access is the only security concern but I was proved wrong here.

Subsequently, there was a question on computerized physician order entry. This recalled my experience at the first clinic where I joined as an intern and learned to access systems. I had a separate session on technologies including EHR, EMR and CPOE. It was that experience that let me to answer this question rightly.

The navigation of the system gave me nostalgic feeling but I am glad that I learned something out of it. That is even important at the end of the day. Medical field is filled with a number of technologies. One needs to be adept to sustain in the field.

It also includes features and processes associated with each of the technologies. Along with this learning, one has to be competent and updated with the trend. This experience made me stand updated and also know how I can use technology to oversimplify my daily clinical tasks and prioritize on patient outcomes.

So this section was unexpected. I thought that navigation just comprises of a few questions. But then, there are clinical and patients' modules to understand the features better.

I somehow scored well and passed in this section.

About my experience, I regained my knowledge in the field of patient record management.

Patient medical insurance has been one area that any person in the healthcare field should gain knowledge on. Lately, there is a lot of misunderstandings and dissatisfaction expressed by patients and healthcare organizations.

As I answered these questions, it reminded me of the impacts that Medicare act created in the society and country on the whole. It was a fuss and there was denial of service in most of the small care providers due to the compromise on pay and variation in the pay duration. The one question that I answered wrongly in this section reminded me that I will have to relearn the tools.

The final section was on authentication.

Reflection

I personally feel that this drchrono experience is worth my lifetime. While it gave a practical experience, I would also add it to the leadership attitude that it brought in me.

The scores gave me an understanding on where I should work more and serve in the healthcare field. Unless a person displays leadership at the right time, it is extremely difficult to evolve as a successful practitioner. This drchrono has actually made me think how a EHR system can simplify one's life in this field.

Alternatively, the navigation across different modules of drchrono made me realize that it is possible to achieve patient-first practice that is HIPAA-compliant with this system and there is no more complication in this process. From scheduling to appointment reminder to patient management to recordkeeping, there are many things that I liked about this system.

Patient management is becoming a growing concern in the healthcare segment and patient data is easily manipulated or misused.
