Discussion - Objectification and Oppositional Identity

Post one example of objectification in A Class Divided. Then post one example of oppositional identity in A Class Divided. Explain how objectification and oppositional identity influenced students to redefine their racial and ethnic identities.

Solution - A CLASS DIVIDED: CLASSIC EXPERIMENT

Objectification and Oppositional identification are traumatic end results of prejudice and discrimination. While objectification is when individuals are looked as objects rather than human beings, oppositional identity is the situation in which a community or a group excludes other socially less dominant groups. In the clip, "A Class Divided" wherein Jane Elliott divided the third grade class by their eye colour to make her pupils understand how it feels to be discriminated. In the activity, she praised blue eyed group throughout the day and called them better than the brown eyed fellows. She even allowed privileges to the blue eyed ones and then following day she exercised the same by praising and allowing privileges to the brown eyed third graders. ("'A Class Divided': How we learn to discriminate", 2019) This was a daring racist experiment and clearly outlined how important diversity is.

By calling out kids as black kids, it's clearly identifying them as objects and not as individuals. The two day course had astonishing results for both the students and the teacher as the "superior" students had been mean minded and objectified the "inferior" group and discriminated against them. It transformed the earlier sweet and co-operative children to nasty, vicious and discriminating third graders. After the exercise, the kids are brought together making them realize the importance of empathy and how much discrimination can hurt. ("Project Humanities", 2019)The superior blue eyed group practices the oppositional identity agenda against the brown eyed group and show resistance in including them in their group. Kids understood that they are better off without any grounds for discrimination. Eliott had successfully established the fact that whichever group of people are favoured and made to feel superior are likely to be more enthusiastic and perform better than those who are discriminated and shown down upon. It introduced correctional measures. Although modern ethics doesn't allow a teacher to do this kind of an experiment, still the lesson's impact can't be ignored in today's world as well.
