Identification of the country and brief overview of how social classes function within it

The country that has been recognized is India that is known to have a complicated caste system. In India, the caste system involves the Hindus that has been divided into a rigid hierarchical groups. This system has been accepted in India that has been more than 3000 years old. The caste system is known as manusmriti that was introduced before the birth of Christ. This system has been justified based on order as well as regularity of society. There are a total of four major categories under which the Hindus has divided the caste system (BBC, 2016). The categories are Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and the Shudras. It has been believed by the Hindus that the caste system has been formed from Brahma who is known as the Hindu God of creation. Based on the caste system, the social class functions in India. The Brahmins are regarded as the top caste that mostly comprised of teachers as well as intellectuals. The second category comprises of Kshatriayas that mostly embraced on warriors as well as rulers. The third category comprised of Vaishyas that included traders. The bottom class is known as the Shudras who has been responsible to carry out all the menial jobs (Rosenblum & Travis, 2016). The communities were arranged based on the caste system that got divided into upper caste and lower caste. This in turn segregated their colonies and they were not supposed to share water wells as well. The Brahmins did not accept food that were served by the Shudras. As a result, the upper caste got bestowed with several privileges but the lower caste had to witness sanctioning subjugation. As a result, the social class in India turned out to be regressive as well as unjust. As a result, the individuals got trapped into fixed social orders from which they found it impossible to run away.

Historical Example of How Social Class In General Has Changed

The social class in general has changed over time due to hard boundaries that was set by British colonial rulers. In other words, the British rulers made the caste system as the social aspect by simplifying them using the censuses. This was initiated to create an individual society with a common law in order to govern in an easier way. The social class altered with time that made India independent (BBC, 2016). The new constitution in India banned caste discrimination as well as corrected historical injustices. The social class drastically altered after the government introduced quota system in jobs as well as educational institutions for the scheduled caste as well as tribes.

The influence of secular education along with increasing urbanization has caused the caste system to change in India. As a result, inter-caste marriages are turning out to be common. According to BBC (2016), this change increased demand for OBC certificates by Jat and Patel communities as they stated being poor.

Current Social Class

The present social class in India indicates that the life quality has been influenced by socioeconomic status. This in turn has led to privileges that has been afforded by the individuals in the society. In spite of change in the social class, there are several caste groups who still vote as a block (BBC, 2016). The politicians are mostly blamed for this as they provoke this caste system for electoral benefits. As a result, the aim to improve the unprivileged groups turned out to be a political agenda to grab more votes.

Reflection

I don't think the social class will change as the caste system in India still continues to have a strong influence on the society. The Hindus are still segregated into diverse societal groups based on the birth. In other words, inequalities in India is still persistent in spite of multiple measures that has been undertaken to strengthen the differences to some extent. The caste system has also spilled over into other religions that provoked them to initiate similar types of social stratification.

Conclusion

It could be concluded that the upper caste got bestowed with several privileges but the lower caste had to witness sanctioning subjugation. The politicians are mostly blamed for this as they provoke this caste system for electoral benefits.
