Dear diary,
I came across an essay by Miguel Vale de Almeida that discusses the issues of hybridism as well as miscegenation in the context of the Portuguese people. The essay Longing for Oneself ': Hybridism and Miscegenation in Colonial and Postcolonial Portugal state how hybridism, which is a reminiscent that is troubling from the 19th century is still a matter to debate on in the field of social sciences. Hybridism is considered a physical phenomenon and is equated to monsters but it still is an issue of cultural debate that troubles the postcolonial world. Portugal's association with this context is astonishing as Brazil have been considered as the miscegenating and humanistic character of the expansion in Portugal, arguments have also been presented to legitimize the colonialism that came later in Africa and represent the Portuguese population as non-racist. However, Portugal as I understood was never termed as a miscegenated nation but the contemporary expression of the word hybridity, which is part of the multiculturalism, postcolonial Diasporas, and globalization clashes often with race in the cultural context. The context is not regarded as good or evil in the modern world but has now a politically corrected expression. While Brazil celebrated miscegenation, Portugal conquered it to unite the people through taste, acceptance, etc., and have helped the black culture, which as I fathomed is the postcolonial way of life.
