Framing in the field of business communication is a set of concepts and theoretical perspectives which are influenced by various factors -professional prestige, hierarchical structure and financial incentives as well. Understanding heterogeneous environment where it's important to be cognizant of individual values backed by their cultural and ethical beliefs. The analysis of study of Carol Kinsey Goman emphasize the importance of studying cultural differences and their impact on business communication. The way we communicate is basically influenced by three important factors which have been laid down by the author as oppositions. (Song, 2019)
The first opposition being high-context/low-context ,in which high-context values picking up cues from non-verbal kinesics, paralanguage, and other gestures. Low-context cultures prefer explicit communication in the form of written words. The second opposition is Sequential vs Synchronic cultures. The major difference in these two cultures stem from the way they perceive time and all management around it. As sequential culture inclined people consider being late as disrespectful and a bad time management indication while synchronic cultures business people consider too much of insistence on timeliness as signs of immature impatience. These differences may cause issues if not enough sensitization is created and maintained before the actual communication happens.
The third one is Affective vs Neutral Cultures, which speaks of distinction on the basis of proportion of reason and emotion mixed with business communication. Effective people show their feelings plainly whereas neutral ones are free from emotions and interact with subdued emotions, countries like Japan, UK, Norway and the Netherlands are ones which are neutral culture barriers. ("Sequential vs Synchronic time perception", 2019)
To build better business relationships, framing plays a pivotal role while communicating which needs to be built on the grounds of knowing each other's cultures better. Most of the international business is premised on how well the parties involved are aware of each other's cultures and what's acceptable or not. With increased globalization, the most significant key to success lies in effective communication with perfect framing keeping all the cultural diversity in mind. ("Sequential/Synchronic", 2019)
