Safety on Oil Rigs

1.Background

Offshore safety on oil rings could be unsafe places to work. Over the past few years, many offshore explosions have led to environmental calamities and the death of several workers. It has been identified that most of the residents and workers in those areas were unprepared of the impact on health and safety hazards at the location. It is clear, an understanding gap exists, and collaborative works between emergency response community and exploration organisations could offer higher levels of safety for local people, workers and communities.

3.The Questionnaire

The closed-ended questionnaire has been devised with the help of five group members. The closed-ended questionnaire aims at pointing out responses regarding current conditions of safety and security in oil rigs. Design of the survey has been done by keeping up in mind the primary data collection process. The procedure for preparing the questionnaire has two team members who studied and decided on the sample size of 50 respondents. These respondents are current employees in the oil and gas industry. Survey of the selected respondents will be done to extract answers from them. Another team member has designed a minimum of ten questions. The other team members have the responsibility to analyse all the responses derived from the survey. The questionnaire has been listed below;

1. What is your age?

2. What is your Gender?

3. What is the length of working in the oil and gas industry?

4. Is the management responsible for communicating about health and safety issues?

5. What are the three principal sources of information regarding health and safety?

6. Are awareness of safety issues helpful for employees in future?

7. How useful are the present methods of protection in oil rigs?

8. What are the significant changes that need to be done to ensure adequate health and safety conditions?

9. Is hazard and accident prevention have been developed in the last five years?

10. Is this industry culture is safe for work?

4.Results Analysis

From the survey results, it has been identified that the Gas and Oil industry is recruiting experts for the oil drilling and works in the oil rigs. On the other hand, it also has been understood that organisations are undergoing several technological and training changes for reducing accidents and deaths in oil rigs. Additionally, employees are overall satisfied with the current developments in safety and health measures taken by the organisations to aid the community and workers' life. Around 40% of total respondents have pointed to the fact that current safety measures are satisfactory. Though there are rooms for several developments in the future. For instance, changes in the technological testing methods and training needs are considered to be most important among the options related to safety developments in the oil and gas industry. Organisations should consider these facts seriously. Moreover, from these facts another significant thing become prominent is that employees are still amid life-threatening accidents while working in the oil rigs, which make this industry still risky for workers.  

5. Areas of further research

Areas for possible further research should be based on specific advancements made in regards to safe and secure work in the Gas and Oil industry around the globe. Future research should be based on the fact that if technological developments and supervision methods have been changed by many organisations, then how these changes are impacting the employees and how these changes are capable for reducing chances of accidents and limiting numbers of deaths in oil rigs. Further research should also be based on developing demands of employees on support providence by the management and government after accidents in oil rigs.
