Explain how and why state intervention, labeling, and societal reaction led to unanticipated consequences, according to the labeling theorists.

According to the labelling theorists, the dominant and powerful group within the society tries to create and impose deviant labels on the subordinate groups. The groups which provide and enforce the main source of labelling includes court officials, police, school authorities, experts and society. In the process of applying labels to the common people, they tend to create various categories of deviance and tries to undertakes the power of the society. As a result of labelling, the delinquent or criminal behaviour of the subordinate groups tends to increase (Pastore, G. (2017).

According to the theorists, the powerful individuals or state force the weaker people to commit crime when some of their behaviours are labelled as inappropriate by them. It is often seen that an individual engages in that behaviour which is perceived as inappropriate by others. Thus, it is necessary to understand that the negative response of people towards a particular behaviour makes that behaviour to be labelled as ‘deviant’ or ‘criminal’.

Discuss the relationship between crime and capitalism, as advanced by the radical and new criminological conflict theorists. Which theorist, in particular, do you most agree with? Why?

According to the criminological conflict theory describes the presence of inequality within the society which is attributed to the increase in competition for limited resources. In the modern society, people with maximum power and wealth tries to suppress the powerless and poor people. Capitalism in this consideration is referred to the development of economic system leading to the increased rate of crime within society. For example, the labours are considered as commodity because of having mnimum power and less control over the economic system. Hence, their worth can be devalued with time, creating an imbalance between labours and owners. This problem created social conflict which often turned into crime.

In particular, I agree with Karl Marx’s view which suggests that both crime and deviance are decided by the ruling group and they implement it for social control (Milios, & Dimoulis, 2018). Here, it is also argued that most of the laws are developed to protect the primary interest (especially property) of capitalist class, which later on created dispute and crime among people.
